Mount Evans

Mount Evans, Denver, Colorado

The Basics

Mount Evans is a popular day trip from Denver, 60 miles (95 kilometers) east. Those who don’t want to drive can join private and group tours for a hassle-free experience to the top of the mountain. Travel along the Mount Evans Scenic Byway, which begins south of Idaho Springs. Gaining more than 7,000 feet (2,000 meters) in elevation, it is the highest paved road in North America.

The landscape changes as you ascend—watch for bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and other wildlife among wildflowers, depending on the time of year you’re visiting. At the summit, be rewarded with views of alpine lakes, valleys, and other mountain peaks.

The experience as a whole was great! The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the summit and answered all of our questions, if she didn’t know the answer she would make the effort to look it up.

Would definitely recommend taking this tour. Reservations are required to enter the park and driving on the roads is easier said than done. It was nice having a tour guide driving us so we could enjoy the stunning views. We also did get to see some wildlife on the tour.

Private Scenic Mount Evans Tour from Denver
It was awesome. Its one of the best scenery. Our Tour guide Madhu Madhumati Ramesh was very helpful and she was descriptive in Hindi. We were a group of 6 Sr Citizen couples and she took care of us like his own parents.

Overall a great trip. Would have liked a little more time at the stops. There was time to do the basics, but felt rushed at most experiences.

Mount Evans Summer Mountain Summit
This was our first visit to Denver and I am so glad we did this excursion! We had a very comfortable ride to the mountain and our tour guide, Kristen, shared many interesting facts and stories about the area. We made stops at many beautiful sites, and the summit of Mt. Evans was absolutely incredible. We saw amazing scenery and wildlife throughout the day, and then stopped for lunch in Idaho Springs, a charming mountain town. Most importantly, the trip felt very personal - our guide truly got to know each of us while keeping us safe and comfortable. I highly recommend this tour!

Worthwhile Trip

Mount Evans Summer Mountain Summit
The tour was great. A scenic trip to the top of Mt. Evans (fifth highest paved road in the world) and all the sights along the journey made the excursion well worth the time and money. Beautiful scenery, an abundance of wildlife, comfortable transportation (about 12 people), and excellent commentary by the guide made the trip enjoyable. The guide used a microphone in the van which made listening to her a pleasant experience ... although that accommodation sounds like a no brainer, I went on a tour (with a different provider) in the same size van and the guide had to yell (over the air conditioning) for people in the back to hear. Not enjoyable for the passengers.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Weather can change quickly in the mountains; be prepared for short storms and bring layers, as it is often much colder here than in Denver.

  • Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, sunscreen, and a hat when exploring hiking trails in the area.

  • Fees are charged per vehicle or per person for hikers and bikers.

  • Parking at the summit is usually available on weekdays; you may wait up to 30 minutes for a parking spot on crowded weekends.

How to Get There

From Denver, head west on Interstate 70 to Idaho Springs and then turn south onto State Highway 103, the start of the Mount Evans Scenic Byway. At Echo Lake, continue south on State Highway 5 to reach the top of the mountain. Or, arrive as part of a tour that includes transportation.

When to Get There

Because vehicles can access the summit, it can be very crowded with summer travelers and locals visiting on weekends; try going on a weekday and arrive in the early morning for the best photo ops and available parking and to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. The narrow, winding upper section of the byway is typically only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Echo Lake and Summit Lake

During the journey along the byway, two parks offer the chance to stretch your legs, explore hiking trails, or relax—Echo Lake Park, at the junction of Highways 103 and 5, and Summit Lake Park, 9 miles (14 kilometers) farther up the road. Stop by Echo Lake Lodge to visit the restaurant, bar, or gift shop, and watch for mountain goats at Summit Lake.
