The Basics

If you want to see a Broadway production with rave reviews (or any show, really), it's best to book tickets in advance. Broadway is No. 1 for a reason, with visitors and New Yorkers alike vying for prime tickets. Pricing can vary greatly per show and per showtime, making a theater excursion accessible for almost every budget. Shows range from the musical theater to the family friendly to the risque, so there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Aside from buying the coveted theater tickets, there are other options to take in the sights and history on Broadway. Visitors might opt for a behind-the-scenes walking tour to learn about NYC landmarks and legends before stepping into a theater and getting a deeper understanding of the venue's history, backstage stories, and the insider's details that put it on the map. Some tours are even led by a tour guide who is a former (or current) Broadway performer.

MAGNIFICENT!!
This was a Breathtaking experience! Loved every moment and the seats were exceptional and on my birthday. My 18 yo old football playing son attended with me and cheered and clapped the whole way thru. He's hooked now and wants to return for MJ on Broadway. True pleasure!

Broadway Behind-the-Scenes Small-Group Tour
Our guide, Makayla, was very well- informed and shared a healthy amount of information. Appreciated hearing about various facets of Broadway productions, not just the show itself.

Claire handled the windy, cold afternoon with grace, by warming our minds and hearts with interesting history about the city and Broadway. Her stories were engaging and her wit sharp. Even though we have been visiting NY for decades, we definitely enjoyed this tour. Thanks, Claire. Break a leg. Absolutely worth the time. Thanks, Claire.

The interaction with tour guides with actual experience and aspirations in the business was paramount for my daughter whom also shares the affinity of performance. True and gritty discussion that paints the reality of giving your dreams a shot in the Big Apple.

Knowledgeable but too much outside time

Disney on Broadway Behind-the-Scenes Walking Tour
Our guide was very personable and knowledgeable. However, when reading the details of the tour, you failed to mention that most of the time would be spent outdoors when we thought it would take place in the theatres. It was extremely cold which made it very unpleasant and difficult to enjoy.

Disney on Broadway Behind-the-Scenes Walking Tour
Absolutely recommend this experience to anyone who loves theater history, who loves New York Broadway experiences and who loves Disney! The tour guide was amazing and an aspiring Broadway star! Enjoyed all of the history and fun facts. The backstage tour of the New Amsterdam was amazing, the ghost stories, and my teens actually put their phones down and got excited about trying on the Disney costumes.

Chris was a wonderful guide. He really knows his Broadway history and shared very interesting experiences of what it is like to be an actor in NYC. He was friendly, enthusiastic (obviously loves the theater), and easy to talk to. This tour was lots of fun and gives you another view on the Broadway experience.

When to Get There

Because the star attractions of Broadway are the (indoor) theater shows, you can visit year round. A great way to take in the sights is on a walking tour that combines theater history and a show.

Top-Grossing Broadway Shows of All Time

Along with the latest new hits, some famously long-running shows are still playing on Broadway, including the Tony Award-winning musical Chicago at the Ambassador Theater, Wicked at the George Gershwin, The Lion King at the Minskoff, and The Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theater. As it happens, these Broadway musicals are also some of the top-grossing shows of all times. The Book of Mormon is another favorite.
