The Laxminarayan temple or Birla Mandir was built by an Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist Baldeo Das Birla and his son Jugal Kishore Birla from 1933 to 1939. It was built under the guidance of Pandit Vishwanath Singh. Maharaja Udhaynhanu Singh laid the foundation of the temple in 1933. The Father of the Nation i.e. Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated the Birla Mandir in 1939 with a condition that all classes of people would be allowed to visit inside the temple and there would be no differentiation which means all are equal.

Rashtrapati Bhavan the official residence of the President of India was designed as the residence of the Viceroy in the British Imperial capital. Edwin Lutyens designed this building, then known as Government House or the Viceroy’s House. 29,000 workers were employed to construct the Viceroy's House. Construction began in 1914 and continued till 1927. It is the largest residential complex ever built for a head of the state anywhere in the world and spread across 320 acres with 340-rooms which includes the official residence of the President of India, halls, guest rooms, offices etc.. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is an awe-inspiring structure, a stoic symbol of British imperialism (interestingly, its façade is the same length— 630 ft—as that of Buckingham Palace). After India’s independence in 1947, the last Governor-General, C. Rajagopalachari, stayed on at the Rashtrapati Bhavan until 1950, when the republic’s first President, Rajendra Prasad, shifted into the building.

Qutub Minar
Our next attraction is an heritage monument. Qutub Minar is a towering 73 meter high tower built by Qutub-ud-Din Aibak in 1193. The tower was built to celebrate Muslim dominance in Delhi after the defeat of Delhi’s last Hindu ruler. The first three storeys of the Qutub Minar are made of red sandstone and the last two are made of marble and sandstone. Apart from the tower, the Qutub Minar complex comprises of the the first mosque built in India Quwwat-us-Islam , the tomb of Iltutmish, Ala’i-Darwaza and the Ala’I Minar. Alai Minar construction was started by Alaudin Khilji, who probably wanted it to be bigger and taller than the Qutub Minar. The construction was halted when he died and not taken up again. Another popular attraction is the Iron Pillar, a marvel of architecture, for the way it has resisted corrosion through the last 1,600 years.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum
Our Next stop, Indira Gandhi museum. Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was India’s third prime minister and the daughter of the First Prime Minister of Independent India. On 31st October 1984 she was assassinated by her own bodyguards. The house where she was residing and later assasinated has been converted into a museum . Inside the museum, her belongings are preserved the way they were when she was alive. One can also see the collection of rare photographs of the Nationalist movement, the personal moments of the Nehru-Gandhi family and her childhood. Fragments of the clothes she was wearing and, even more poignantly, her trainers, are on display. On the way out, you’ll pass an enclosed crystal pathway that marks Late Indira Gandhi’s final footsteps before her murder.

Humayun's Tomb
Our next attraction is a heritage monument - Humayun’s tomb. Humayun’s wife, Hamida Banu, or Hazi Begum, was instrumental behind the construction of this magnificent tomb. The tomb took 14 years to construct, this was the first garden tomb in India, and was a precursor to the magnificent Taj Mahal which was built by Humayun’s great grandson Shah Jahan 60 years later in Agra. The tomb complex has several interesting monuments apart from the main tomb itself like the Barber’s tomb. It is believed to be the tomb of Humayun’s barber – the importance accorded signifies the position of high trust that the royal barber enjoyed amongst royal servants.

Akshardham Temple of New Delhi is also known as Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple. It is one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in India. It was officially inaugurated on 6th November, 2005. Its history and facts reflects 10,000 years old India’s culture, spirituality and architecture. It has been made in the memory of Jyotirdhar Swaminarayan Bhagwan. The construction of Akshardham Complex was completed in just five years with the efforts of Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) along with the help of thousands of artisans and BAPS volunteers. The temple is spread over 83,342 square feet area. It consists of 350 feet long, 315 feet wide and 141 feet high monuments, which are very attractive. The structure of the temple was designed in such a way that it can last for at least 1000 years more.

We booked 2 tickets for this for 38 before arriving, expecting to be able to visit several tourist sites each day. The first afternoon we arrived at the office to pick up our tickets at 2pm and were told the last bus left at 1.30. According to the website, the complete circuit takes around 3.5 hours and the tours finish at 6pm. This is obviously incorrect. Traffic in Delhi is horrendous, and locally we were advised not to take this tour but to take a taxi instead. We did so: hire of a taxi for an 8 hour day worked out at 25 for the two of us. We gave the driver a list of places we wanted to visit and he drove us, in a newish comfortable air conditioned vehicle, to all the sites on out list, waited for us while we made our visit and picked us up promptly each time. He was courteous, honest and knew Delhi well. We asked the hotel concierge to find us a taxi not a hotel car, which is expensive. I highly recommend this over the more expensive and less reliable bus tour.

DONT BOOK THIS TOUR. It is a waste of TIME and MONEY. There are no longer Red and Green routes. Only a Purple combined route. The bus has Kenny G tunes played at full volume with a taped English message played over the music at random intervals. Thetour guide, who barely speaks English, then yells the same phrase over top of Kenny G. The bus does not drive a circle route. And you are stranded at some distant locales because the next bus does not arrive. Terrible. Hire a driver and car from a service or your hotel. You will be much much happier!

This was a great way to experience Delhi as we could disembark at places we were most interested in. Having a limited time in New Delhi meant that this was the best option to choose as it covered a wide area and included all the major sights and attractions. Even if you didn't want to get off, you could see a lot by just cruising past, and the commentators pointed out things of interest as they were coming up and advised passengers whether to get off and explore or to stay on til the next point. Very informative. Although the female tour guides were too fast in talking and the intonation sometimes made it hard to pick up what they were saying. Otherwise very enjoyable....I was with my elderly mother and we both found it a great experience.

I was a bit disappointed with this. The actual bus routes and frequencies were ok but the state of the buses was really depressing - they really needed a thorough clean. All the seats, poles and windows felt quite grimy. The pick up/drop off at Dilli Haat was not very well identified at all and I lost all sense of where we were supposed to meet.

This is the best way to see New Delhi. We saw more of the city in one day than we expected. We stopped at recommended locations and enjoyed every minute. Each bus had someone explaining the stops and made sure we did not miss anything as well as providing an escape from the heat and hustle and bustle of Delhi life.

The Hop on Hop off itself was great and worth the money! But DO NOT BUY THE GPS device. We had to argue with the people at the counter just to get it even though we already paid. They didn't have the devices ready so we had to wait while they looked for them and figured out how to use them. We never ended up using them and it was a waste of money!

There were supposed to be 2 routes but there was only a combined route which is very long. Buses were late. No maps were available at the checkin counter as they were out. Might be better off hiring a rickshaw for the day to take you around.

Easy to get our tickets for the bus which was clean. Great for getting an idea of the layout of New Delhi! The only issue is there's so much traffic in Delhi between cars/trucks, autorickshaws, bicycles, motorcycles, and pedestrians.

This is not a bad thing if you can make bus schedule work , it's a cheap way to get key sites . Hard to find main office to get tickets, we had to call like three times to narrow down where it was , info on sites was weak but people nice and buses on time. But having hired cars since first day, would say spend money and do that. Guides will push for you to visit their friends shops, but strangers will bug you with same stuff while you are waiting for bus!

The busses ran on time and were clean. Helpful staff and the sites exceeded expectations. The tour narrators had varying levels of accent, one was hard to understand. The "all inclusive" ticket (incl all entrance fees) doesn't work. I had to pay all site fees and request cash refund at end of day.

Thank you very much for your feedback. To clarify, it is a frequent occurrence and custom, that there are very different rates for Indian nationals and non-Indians when entering tourist sites. In this case, the prices paid for via Viator were the same as offered by the ticket office itself in the case of non-Indian nationals.
