Muir Woods National Monument is a must-see destination on any visit to the San Francisco Bay Area. Just a short drive across the Golden Gate Bridge, the protected nature reserve is home to one of the world’s last remaining coastal redwood forests.

Choose from a morning or afternoon departure. Stop at a vista point for a fantastic perspective of the Golden Gate and Alcatraz, and wind through the rolling emerald hills of the Marin Headlands to arrive at Muir Woods. Stroll along forest paths surrounded by the giant redwood trees, some of which stretch as high as 250 feet (76 meters) and date back nearly 800 years.

After Muir Woods, take a short drive to the artistic bayside village of Sausalito. Capture wonderful photos of the San Francisco skyline during a stroll along the waterfront, pop into one of the many art galleries and grab a cappuccino or ice cream at a local café (own expense).

Your tour concludes with drop-off at Union Square in San Francisco or choose the option of taking the ferry back to San Francisco from Sausalito.

Traveler Tips

  • "Parking at Muir Woods is so limited (and requires a timed permit) that the tour bus is the best way to go." See review

The woods and trails were amazing. It was a short ride from the San Francisco Bay. I’d recommend this outdoor experience.

Entertaining and professional tour

We had a great tour. Our driver Jack, did a great job. The tour guide, David, was very knowledgeable about the areas along our route, historical events, and the Muir Woods. We wish we had taken a tour that allowed for more time in Muir Woods and Sausalito. One hour in each location is definitely too short. I would definitely take another tour with this company.

Hello Tim, thanks for your review and recommendation of Gray Line San Francisco for your next adventure in San Francisco. I will transmit your great review to our guide; he will be happy to hear it. For future customers, we would like to explain that tour operators are allowed to park in Muir Woods for a limited amount of time, so regretfully for us, we can't offer a long experience in the woods than the one we currently offer. Would you please let us know once you're back in the city so we can offer you another great adventure? :) Andrew Sales Manager Gray Line San Francisco

The awesomeness of the trees. It was nice to see how big they are. Pictures don't really do it justice.

Muir Woods!

Muir Woods is beautiful. Our tour guide was fabulous and gave so much information. The tour operator had some issues with our reservation, in spite of showing them our vouchers. Eventually they let us get on the bus, and the rest of the day was very enjoyable.

Great trip

Loved the trip—bus was on time there and back and the driver very knowledgeable about the surrounding area. My only disappointment was that there didn’t seem to be a longer tour option. I’m not deducting stars from my review for that because we got exactly what we paid for—I only wish, as a suggestion, that Viator did tours that lasted over an hour at Muir Woods. I understand that that section was short because multiple people on our bus had other Viator booked tours they needed to get to afterwards. However, arranging longer *solely* Muir Woods trips would be really nice as one hour walking around had us rather rushed at the end with hardly any time left to visit the gift shop or even use the restroomif we wanted to maximize our time amongst the beautiful redwoods. But, as I said, the hour there was what we paid for, and the whole morning was run very smoothly. Would definitely book again.

Hello Allison, Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate your comments as it allows us to explain ourselves to other travelers. Every tour operator is limited to 90 minutes of parking permitted in Muir Woods National Park. However, we hear customer feedback like yours, and we are proposing Muir Woods management to increase this time to 120'. We hope we can get this request approved soon. Would you mind checking all the other tours that Gray Line San Francisco offers in San Francisco and its surroundings so you can enjoy great experiences like the ones you had? Come back soon! Great experience. John was very informative. Bus ride up the mountain was a bit scary but he was a great guide. Go early in the day before Muir Woods gets busy

Worth the money

Sadly, the Golden Gate Bridge was very shy at the 8 AM tour because of the fog. But that was expected. Muir Woods have been fantastic, the longest hike towards bridge 4 and back is absolutely manageable for the time the bus is waiting (if you don’t walk like a snail) - I loved the little stop at Sausalito where we grabbed some sandwiches and walked through different shops. Very unique. The driver was a great driver and had lot of knowledge, and some jokes :] overall a great experience.

Hello Duska, Thanks so much for leaving us a great review. I'm sorry you had to meet Karl (the Fog) during your visit to San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. We all love sunny days, but meeting Karl is part of the adventure when visiting the city by the Bay. I appreciate your compliments to our guide and the great description of the tour. We hope you'll join us again on your next visit to San Francisco. Check out all the other popular tours we run, such as the Wine Tour or the Yosemite tour.
